The historic Rath Mela of Mahishadal, a 629-year-old annual festival celebrated with grand religious fervor in East Midnapore, West Bengal, has been cancelled in 2025, marking the first time in recorded history that the chariot procession will not take place.
The reason? Alleged administrative delays and lack of support from the Trinamool Congress-led state government. Locals claim that the district administration failed to issue necessary clearances, triggering outrage among devotees, temple priests, and opposition leaders.
The Rath Mela, held during the Jagannath Rath Yatra, draws lakhs of devotees and tourists, offering not just spiritual significance but also crucial livelihood opportunities for local vendors, artisans, and workers.
Many have accused the government of showing
“cultural apathy” and “deliberate neglect of Hindu traditions.”
While authorities have cited “security and infrastructure concerns,” critics say the last-minute halt reflects political bias and poor planning, especially given the event’s centuries-old legacy.
