ICC Introduces Change to Two-Ball Rule in ODI Cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a significant change to the two-ball rule in One Day International (ODI) cricket, set to take effect from July 2025. This update is aimed at striking a better balance between bat and ball, as well as addressing concerns related to ball wear and reverse swing in the latter stages of an innings.

Under the previous rule, two separate new balls were used simultaneously — one from each end — throughout the entire 50-over innings. However, critics argued that this rule limited reverse swing and took away the challenge for batters in the death overs due to less ball deterioration.

According to the new rule, two new balls will still be used from the beginning of the innings, but only for the first 34 overs — each from one end. After the 34th over, the fielding team will have the choice to select one of the two used balls to continue with for the final 16 overs (overs 35 to 50).

This change is designed to bring more strategy into play, as teams will now decide which ball is better suited for the conditions and situation of the match. It is also expected to aid bowlers in extracting more reverse swing and bring bowlers back into the game in the final overs.

The ICC hopes this update will enhance the competitive nature of ODIs and maintain a more even contest between bat and ball.
